We believe that trees are for everyone including industrial and commercial properties. Industrial and commercial sites are an important part of our landscape, and are a valuable partner in growing a vibrant and healthy Tacoma.

Different land uses, such as industrial, commercial, multi-residential and single-residential, can contribute to greening in different ways. We understand the importance of recognizing these differences and want to work as a team to make Tacoma safer, quieter and healthier for everyone who works and lives here.

The City of Tacoma has recognized the Tacoma Mall Regional Growth Center, along with other areas of Tacoma, as areas with low levels of tree canopy or green landscape. These areas are being targeted as places where we can make an impact on the City’s goal of growing the canopy cover in Tacoma from the current 19% to 30%.

Planting and caring for trees on your business property is not only good environmentally but is also good for business. Providing quality urban forest in business districts positively affects how that district and the products and customer service are perceived (University of Washington).

You Can Make A Difference

As a member of this community your input is a valuable asset for greening the area. We are working with multiple partners to provide free trees and assistance as needed.

We are looking for commercial and industrial properties to partner with as case studies to show trees can be incorporated into the landscape.

If you are interested in having more trees and green landscape for your property, please fill out the survey below so we can understand your needs better and work together to plant trees in Tacoma.

Why Your Participation Makes A Difference

The City of Tacoma and Plan-it GEO completed a land assessment in 2018 using high-resolution imagery for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agriculture Imagery Program and 2017 LiDAR data from Washington State Department of Natural Resources. This assessment was to find out how much of Tacoma was urban tree canopy. They identified 5 classes of land cover: urban tree canopy, other vegetation, soil and dry vegetation, impervious and water. 52% of Tacoma is impervious surface. This was further divided into types of impervious surfaces. “12 percent of Tacoma’s total areas was buildings and 40 percent was ‘other impervious’ (such as roads, sidewalks and parking lots).” - City of Tacoma Urban Tree Canopy Assessment Report.

Landscapers Make A Difference Too

Landscapers and tree care companies have an important part to play in growing a healthy and thriving tree canopy. If you are a landscaper or tree care company that would like to increase tree canopy in Tacoma, please take this survey to tell us about your business.

Sign up to be on list for landscaper training. Whenever possible, we try to provide opportunities to get ISA credits and pesticide certification credits through participation in free trainings.
